5 Ways to Transfigure a Black Dress into a Costume
I love a little black dress. It’s a versatile wardrobe staple that isn’t just great for weddings or date nights, but also for Halloween.
One of my favorite ideas for Halloween is to build your costume around a stunning little black dress. Not only will you have a costume uniquely suited to your personal style, but you’ll also have an article of clothing you’re likely to reach for over and over again.
Here are five of my favorite looks featuring a Halloween little black dress:
There’s a timeless style to Lauren Bacall’s look that I adore. She wore a few different black ensembles, but one of the easiest to replicate is an off-the-shoulder v-neck dress. Accessorize this dress with a pearl choker and some simple earrings, and you’re ready for the party.
I love Morticia’s form-fitting black dress, but Wednesday Addams’ sports a black dress that’s equally iconic. The white Peter Pan collar is the most defining feature of this look and offers an alternative for anyone who wants something less form-fitting.
Consistently clad in all black, the sullen teenager from Beetlejuice has a look all her own. The ensemble can be achieved with either a casual black dress or a black skirt and top.
The Witches from American Horror Story: Coven
If you have a group of ladies going out for Halloween, then you might want to consider going as the witches from American Horror Story: Coven. The coven sports a variety of black dresses and hats that allows you and your friends to choose your own style.
Go as the original little black dress! Marie Claire UK recently traced the phenomenon of the little black dress back to 1926, with a Vogue illustration of a dress that was dubbed “Chanel’s Ford.” The ensemble features layers of pearls and a hat. (And did you notice the pockets?)
