So, you’ve probably heard of the old “don’t wear white after Labor Day” rule. While there are many theories on where this clothing decree originated, we’d like to explain why it’s an unnecessary relic.

We contend you CAN wear white after Labor Day. Here’s why . . .

Origin of the “No White After Labor Day” Rule

For those who aren’t familiar, this is the rule that states women shouldn’t wear white clothing, beginning after Labor Day, all the way until the next Memorial Day.

The most believable origin story for this rule goes back to the early 1900s. Fashion trends of the time involved dark colors in the winter, and whites/brights in the summer. It has a lot to do with reserving whites for the summer since they were better for reflecting sunlight, which was very important before the invention of air-conditioning.

Then there was a social-class element to it. At the time, year-round white clothing was fashionably reserved for wealthier folks.

Do Folks Ignore This Rule, Nowadays?

We think this rule is a curious artifact of the early 20th century, but no longer applicable to modern fashion. In fact, it’s nothing to see many women, of all ages, flatly ignore it. Many younger Americans know nothing about this outdated precept.

So, let’s see if there are some ways you CAN use white to look your best, even during the fall/winter months in Pennsylvania.

Ideas for Wearing White Well after Labor Day

  1. Pair White with Black – The most obvious way to make white work is to pair it with its perfect contrast. Especially in business settings, it’s common for professional women to use a simple white blouse with black pants or skirts. This is a reliable look for any time of the year. You can also experiment black hats with white sweaters when it gets colder, and many other black/white combinations.
  2. White & Neutral Colors – Neutral colors refer to those easy-to-match shades like tan or grey. This could work with a white dress augmented with neutral accessories, sweatshirts, dresses, or cardigans. Don’t forget that with fall upon us, you can transition over to those darker tones of orange and brown as well. There’s plenty of room for experimentation.
  3. Fearless Monochrome White – If you’re feeling especially bold, then select a solid-white dress with matching heels, hat, and other relevant accessories. There’s no need to feel encumbered by “no white” peer pressure any longer.

That’s just a small sample of ways to keep white in your wardrobe throughout fall and winter.
