The Best Styles of Dress for Each Body Type
When you’re looking for the perfect dress, you’ll need to know your body type. Knowing this can help you find a dress that compliments your figure. Yet, there are several steps to take to ensure you’re getting a dress that will make you look your best.
Taking your measurements is the best way to determine the dress that’s right for you. This ensures that you’ll get the most accurate measurements.
When it comes to measuring your shoulders, it may be best to have someone else help you. Start at the tip of your shoulder on any side and take the tape to the other side until the end of the tape reaches the tip of the same shoulder.
You’ll also need to measure your bust to get the right dress size for your body type. Measure the fullest portion of your bust to get your bust size. Remember not to allow the measuring tape to press or mash your breasts to get the right measurement.
Measure your waist by standing up straight. Don’t slouch or pull your stomach in. Measure the tiniest part of your waist just above your navel and under your rib cage to get your natural waistline measurement.
Don’t forget to measure your hips as well. Measure the fullest section of your buttocks by placing the measurement tape on one side of your hip and taking the tape from the rear toward your opposite hip before bringing the tape back to its starting point. Measure your hips in front of the mirror to see where the tape levels off.
Once you measure the parts of your body, you’ll have your body structure or type. These measurements will help you in finding dresses that are flattering and unique to your personal style.
Apple Body Shape
If you have an apple body shape, your upper body is heavier than your lower body. If this is your body type, you usually have broad shoulders and a larger bust, so you may find that most of your weight is in your midsection. Wear dresses that take attention away from your upper body by wearing loose-fitting dresses that show off your legs. If you’re wearing a long dress, you can wear a V neckline that makes your torso look longer
Hourglass Body Shape
For proportionate hourglass body shapes, figure-fitting dresses are ideal. Your dresses should come in at the waist and be wider at the hips. Dresses that are slightly low-cut are flattering as well. If you want to really highlight your bust, a plunging V neckline is also a good option.
Pear Body Shape
When you have a pear body shape, most of your weight is in the lower half of your body. Since you have narrow shoulders and wide hips, you’ll want to wear dresses that balance your silhouette. A-line dresses or skirts with ruffled or patterned tops are best since they add definition to your upper body.
Rectangular Body Shape
Rectangular body shapes are well balanced and if you have this body type, your silhouette is most likely proportional from your shoulders to your hips. Your legs and arms are often your best features so enhance these with a short, sleeveless dress that doesn’t have a defined waistline. A-line skirts and dresses are ideal for rectangular body shapes as well. You can also wear blazers and jackets for added visual appeal.
