We’re almost finished with summer, making it the perfect time to think about fall wardrobe adjustments. Of course, this means dusting off those sweaters and jackets, but we all know Oklahoma City remains a little warm for a while longer. Rather than review which items to emphasize over others, let’s try something different and have some fun with color schemes.
Yes, brown, orange, and red are among the traditional fall colors, but what about the more neutral, subdued shades like beige, white, and tan? We think you’ll find that it isn’t too hard to mix in fall-appropriate neutrals if you remember these tidbits.

It’s Time for a Layered Approach
You may have avoided layered outfits this summer unless you worked in one of those buildings with the A/C set to 62 degrees. Now, however, is the perfect time to make a multi-colored outfit with neutral and darker colors as we enter the autumn months. This could be as simple as using a white blouse as a neutral starting point, then layering around it with browns or even blacks/blues. It works just as well in reverse when you have access to light denim jackets, evening scarves, sweaters, and hats.
Combine Various Textures, Patterns, & Fabrics
Here’s where you play with different fabric arrangements like wool sweaters, patterned skirts, and other elements, all in different colors. Once again, the takeaway should be that neutral colors work well to complement brighter or darker options, rather than for just their own sake. It’s also perfectly fine to experiment with items with different weights and thicknesses in various colors. Although the darker shades may match your intuition for the thicker items, there’s no hardline rule.
Certain Colors Help Accessorize
Olive green, for example, is one of those colors that might serve well for accessories (purses, boots, hats, etc.) or even for larger clothing articles. That same shade seems to pair magnificently with khaki pants or skirts. Again, complementarity is the key, so remember to try on something before you fall in love with it. You may find that your outfit idea looks more flattering on others than you (or vice-versa).
So, are you ready to have fun splashing some neutral colors into your fall wardrobe? As always, take your time and put things together deliberately.
