The Best Styles of Dress for Each Body Type

Pear Shaped Body Type

A woman with a waist that is wider than her bust usually considers herself as having a pear-shape body type. She has fuller hips, shoulders that are narrower than her hips, and a fuller rear end.

If your body is pear-shaped, you’ll look fantastic in an A-line dress. With a hemline just below your knees, your hips and thighs will look slender. Another wonderful dress you might try is a maxi style dress. You can further slim the appearance of your lower body with a dropped or embellished neckline, dramatic sleeves, an open back, or a signature belt.

Hourglass-Shaped Body Type

A woman with an hourglass-shaped body type would most likely describe herself as being curvy. With thigh, hip, and bust measurements that are fuller than the average woman, many consider hourglass figures to be perfectly shaped.

Two types of dress are perfect for those with an hourglass figure. The fit and flare of a wrap dress will play up your best features naturally. Alternatively, an empire silhouette will highlight your natural waist and help you show off your wonderful hourglass figure.

The hemline you choose depends on the shape of your legs. Miniskirts work if you have great legs. If you prefer to cover up more of your legs, a dress with a high-waisted skirt that hits slightly below the knee works well, too.

Apple Shaped Body Type

If you have an apple-shaped body type, you are well-proportioned. A woman with an apple shaped body type has shoulders that are broader than her hips. Her body isn’t as curvy in her hip area and her waist isn’t well-defined.

Strapless styles are very flattering to women who have apple-shaped body types. Add a lower neckline to a maxi style and you’ll look great. A wrap dress will definitely flatter your figure. If your legs are your favorite feature, don’t be afraid to wear a mini skirt. If you aren’t as fond of your legs, wear a knee-length shift or sheath style. If you’re a curvy apple shape, an A-line dress will suit you nicely, along with darker colors and diagonal stripes to make you look slimmer.

Athletic Body Type

A woman with an athletic shaped body type has hips and shoulders that measure about the same. She isn’t curvy, and her waist isn’t well-defined or very small. Throughout her body, her weight seems evenly distributed.

If you’re an athletic-shaped woman, most styles look good on you. All you should do is decide which of yours you like best. If you think your legs are great, shorten your hemline. Pretty much any length will work for you. If you like your bust, choose a strapless dress or one with a low neckline.

If you’re more of a rectangular shaped athlete, wear a thin belt to create more of a waistline. You can also slim many parts of your body with dark colors, vertical stripes, or an A-line style dress.
